For the Uniform Protein Crystal Growth payload, we not only supported initial integration but ongoing operations.  UPCG focuses on leveraging the microgravity environment to grow “perfect” protein crystals, which play a large role in turning genes on and off in a process known as gene-expression. By using an X-Ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL), they hope to monitor and trace the molecular changes of this expression in real-time. This is very important because on Earth, we can’t fully see the reaction because the crystals will crack, and the reaction is extremely fast lasting only a few milliseconds. The experiment will give us greater knowledge on the possibilities of growing nanocrystals in space, gene expression, molecular structures, and the boundaries of XFEL technology. All of these can advance humanity’s capabilities in biotechnology and medicine.
